TODABONE®
Bioactive Synthetic Bone Graft
Description
“Todabone” is a synthetic bone graft that are used by dentists ,maxillofacial and orthopedic surgeons for the repair and regeneration of bone damaged by various traumas and diseases. Different generations of biomaterials have been used for this purpose: from neutral biomaterials (Bioinert) to newer generations of bioactive biomaterials (Bioactive) which can be obtained from natural sources (human or animal) or synthetically. “Todabone” is a synthetic bioceramic that belongs to the group of calcium-sodium-phosphosilicate bioactive glasses. This glasses have different grades-based on different chemical compounds-of which, 45S5 grade (Bioglass®) is the most famous. “Todabone” is a bioactive glass 45S5 that is used to treat bone defects.

Mechanism of action:
The Mechanism of action in this product after being implanted in the body includes the following 5 main steps
- Due to the excellent hydrophilic feature of these materials, the graft particles immediately start exchanging ions with the body’s biological fluids right after being implanted in the desired location.
- As a result of these interactions, a calcium phosphate layer forms on the graft particles, which has a composition similar to the mineral phase of natural bone. This layer helps create a bond between the graft particles and the natural bone.
- An increase in the concentration of silicon and phosphorus in the mentioned layer triggers genetic activity aimed at bone regeneration. This process occurs by stimulating the body’s stem cells to differentiate and multiply into osteoblasts.
- At the same time, a relative increase in pH and osmotic pressure at the implantation site, leads to antibacterial feature for the graft. It also activates angiogenesis, anti-inflammatory agents and healing mediators, which significantly assist both the patient and the surgeon during the treatment procedure.
- Ultimately, osteoblasts engage in the reproduction (remodeling) of natural bone by forming a natural collagen matrix and mineralizing the newly formed bones.

Ingredients:
This bone graft is synthesized based on bioactive glass 45S5. The composition of this material consists of 45 weight percent SiO2 as the main network-forming component of the bioactive glass, 24.5 weight percent Na2O and 24.5 weight percent CaO as modifiers, and 6 weight percent P2O5 as a component forming the calcium-phosphate phase. Each of these components has different biological effects, which are listed in below Table.
